Star Students: Keep emailing me at [email protected] to let me know what you have been up to. Here are few things your classmates have been doing:
Timothy got a new fish tank set up.
Avin has been busy baking muffins.
Olivia made a guitar out of recycled materials
Makaih made a cake for his family.
Jakob made a coin bank out of wood.
I know all of you have been busy doing your Scootpad assignments, reading books, taking AR quizzes and xtramath. Keep up the great work!
Math Lessons: Right now the students are working on area and perimeter on Scootpad. A great way to practice is to draw rectangles and give the sides different lengths. Students then can solve for area by using the formula A=L x W (Area = Length x Width)
Make sure you label your answer:
A=L x W
A= 8 sq.ft. x 4 sq.ft.
A= 32 square feet
To find the perimeter students would need to add up each of the sides.
Make sure you label the answer:
P=8 ft. +8ft. +4ft. +4ft.
P= 24 feet
Number Talks: We do this in class so the students are familiar with number talks. Give them the following problems and have them solve the problems in their head. When they know the answer have them share it and then explain to you how they solved the problem. Can they come up with another way to solve the problem?
Number Talk Problems for them to solve:
357+498= 302-45=
87-49= 459+567=
Measurement: Have the students measure 10 different things in the kitchen and measure to the nearest 1/4inch or 1/2 inch. Let me know 3 things that you measured. For example: How long is a spoon? How tall is a cereal box? etc.
Reading: Read for 30 minutes or more a day and keep taking those AR quizzes.
Book ideas: The I Survived Series is a great book collection for third graders to read. They read I Survived the Japanese Tsunami in January. Roald Dahl books are also great for third graders as well. We were in the middle of reading Bud,Not Buddy so they may want to try and finish this novel if they get a chance.
Writing: I assigned a Google Slideshow for you to do a book report. Read a book of your choice and tell me about the book. You can summarize each chapter. Or you could tell me the characters, setting, plot, problem in the story, and conclusion. It is entirely up to you! I can't wait to read them.
